Q: I don't understand how to use this directory. Please explain.
A: There are three ways to use the directory:
- Quick Lists
The simplest of the three. Select the link for the category you want a listing for and you will be shown the entries for that particular category. Please note that the resulting list covers the entire world. - Custom Listing
To make a custom listing, use the drop-down menus to set your criteria and then click the "GO" button below the menus. The difference with a Quick List is that you can actually fine-tune your listing. For instance, rather than getting results for the entire world, you can limit your listing to one particular continent or country. You can also be more specific in what you want to see in your results, like listing fax numbers of restaurants only or websites of schools only. - Keyword Search
To make a keyword search, enter one or more keywords and click the "GO" button below the option fields. If results are returned, your keyword(s) will be highlighted.
Q: What is the difference between a listing and a keyword search?
A: With a listing you essentially define criteria for a larger result set. You can always expect multiple results. The Quick Lists are pre-set custom listings with the largest result set possible for each category.
With a keyword search you don't specify criteria. Instead, you specify exactly what you are looking for. Your results may vary from many to none. This method offers the most control over your search, but keep in mind that being too specific may also hamper your search. As a rule of thumb, therefore, if you can't find what you are looking for with a keyword search, try a custom listing with criteria that narrow down the results to as close to your intended search as possible.
Q: Which search method should I use?
A: Use the Keyword Search if you have an address or phone number, or only a city or temple name. Even a partial word or number will do. Create a Custom Listing if you are looking for more than one result—like a list of phone numbers of all the farms in India, or a list of all restaurants in Europe—or, as mentioned above, if you can't find what you are looking for with a Keyword Search. If you are looking for a world wide general list of either restaurants, communities, phone numbers, fax numbers, etc. use the Quick Lists.
Q: What do the Quick Lists link to?
A: The Quick Lists are essentially pre-set Custom Listings that will show you either all known ISKCON restaurants, farms and communities, phone numbers, fax numbers, etc. for the entire world. Please, therefore, only use these lists if you really need the entire list. If you need a list for a particular continent or country, create a Custom Listing. If you just need information for one particular address, use the Keyword Search.
Q: I found a wrong address. How do I report this?
A: Simply click the "Submit Correction" button for that entry. It will bring you to the addition or correction form with all the relevant data already filled in. All you need to do is make the corrections and submit the form.
For missing or obsolete listings, please go straight to the addition or correction form.
Q: I would like to add an address to your database. How do I do this?
A: You can submit additional entries through our addition or correction form.
Q: If Quick Lists are pre-set custom lists, couldn't I make Quick List links for my own website?
A: Yes, you can, and it offers a great way to consolidate all your address maintenance into one spot. Rather than having to maintain multiple address listings on multiple websites and your entries in this directory, why not only maintain them here and simply link to them from all the other places?
Say you maintain an address list for German temples on your private website or one or more official "ISKCON Germany" websites. You will need to update those lists every now and then. But you would probably also want to keep your listings in our directory up-to-date. That means double work. Why not simply provide a link to our directory that automatically pulls out addresses only for Germany? You could even fine-tune your offer and post links to temples only, restaurants only, or local get-together programs only. And then you would only need to update our directory—which is simple, as we offer you the possibility to become a Country Delegate.
All that is required is that you strictly follow the following format for the URL in your link:
http://directory.krishna.com/index.php?Search=L&Q=N&Format=A&Type=B&Country=C&Continent=D
Where...
A sets the format of the results you need. It must be one of the following:
- All (everything)
- Phone (phone numbers only)
- Fax (fax numbers only)
- Email (email addresses only)
- Website (web sites only)
B sets the type of establishment you need a list for. It must be one of the following:
- All (all types)
- T (temples & centers only)
- F (farms & communities only)
- R (restaurants only)
- E (schools & educational only)
- N (local get-togethers only)
- A (ISKCON affiliates only)
- B (businesses only)
C sets the country or countries you need a list for. It must be one of the following:
- All (all countries)
- One or more supported international two-letter country abbreviations
For more than one country, simply stack the abbreviations. For example, a listing for the USA (us), Spain (es) and Belgium (be) would use the parameter:
Country=usesbe
With the Country parameter set to All, you can also add an additional parameter, Ex, to exclude one or more countries from the listing. For example, to exclude the Netherlands (nl) and Germany (de) from a full listing you would set the parameters as:
Country=All&Ex=nlde
D sets the continent you need a list for. Note: the country setting overrides the continent setting. If you want results for a continent you should set the Country parameter to All and the continent parameter to the proper continent. It must be one of the following:
- All (all continents)
- af (Africa)
- as (Asia)
- oc (Australasia/Oceania)
- eu (Europe)
- na (North America -- USA & Canada)
- sa (Latin America)
Here are some examples of different parameter settings and what they accomplish (for simplicity, the domain part has been replaced with "..." here, but should be included in the real link):
.../index.php?Search=L&Q=N&Format=Phone&Type=All&Country=us&Continent=All
Lists phone numbers only for all ISKCON establishments in the United States.
.../index.php?Search=L&Q=N&Format=All&Type=R&Country=in&Continent=All
Lists complete addresses for restaurants in India only.
.../index.php?Search=L&Q=N&Format=Website&Type=E&Country=All&Continent=eu
Lists websites for all schools in all countries of Europe.
.../index.php?Search=L&Q=N&Format=All&Type=F&Country=ltlvee&Continent=All
Lists full addresses for all farms in the Baltic States—Lithuania (lt), Latvia (lv) and Estonia (ee).
.../index.php?Search=L&Q=N&Format=All&Type=All&Country=All&Continent=sa&Ex=br
Lists full addresses for all establishments in the Spanish speaking countries of Latin America—excluding Brazil (br), where they speak Portugese.
Any combination is possible. But once again, keep in mind that the country specification overrides the continent specification. So even if you have specified Asia while requesting a listing for Germany, you will still get the listing for Germany only.
